(Coming soon)The Wellington Anti-Cull Coalition (WACC) was founded by a group of Wellingtonians who were concerned about the Wellington City Council plans to cull the city pigeons. The coalition was formed with the support of the London-based Save the Trafalgar Square Pigeons (STTSP) in October 2008.
Due to the efforts of our local animal welfare organisations, our active campaign, international support, and the outcry of concern from the public, the Wellington City Council called off their plans to cull the pigeons. However, the perception of a problem has not gone away. We believe the only solution to this, for all parties including the pigeons, is to have non-lethal methods of control adopted. Such as those recommended and specialised in by PiCAS International. We continue to strive towards this goal.
Along the way in 2008, during our research and campaigning, we learnt of many other naturalised species that are viewed negatively, in and around our cities. We realised that the principles of population control for these animals are similar, and there are other options besides killing. We have taken on, as our life's work, the preservation of the lives of these animals and the awakening of the traditional mindset that allows these culling practices to continue.

During our first campaign, we also learnt about the many people and organisations that are working with similar passions and goals in animal welfare. It is unfortunate that New Zealand has need of so many and that they are all so busy. But they are achieving great things and we are in awe of their work. You can find out more about their causes and how to help below.
Helping you help animals (HuHa) is an extension of the Pakuratahi Farm Animal Sanctuary. Situated on the outskirts of Wellington the sanctuary takes in all kinds of injured and neglected animals that need homes and care. On their website HuHa, you can catch up with their stories and learn about the animals they help, and see how you can help too.

Opportunity for animals is a project of the Animal Protection Society, using our tradition of opportunity shopping as fundraising for animals in need. They are working hard to collect funds to establish an animal sanctuary in the Wellington region in the very near future. Don't forget them if you are cleaning out your cupboards, and if you want to experience the true joy of shopping and giving at the same time, check out their shops:

PiCAS International (Pigeon Control Advisory Service International)is the global authority on non-lethal population control for birds. Their methods have been very successful in controlling pigeon populations in large European cities like London and Paris. They work hard within the UK to educate councils on the long-term costs of culling and how to control populations successfully and sustainably without culling, non-lethally. They have offered their consultation and custom made solutions to the Wellington City Council on an expenses only basis, which the council has thus far refused.
If you are really interested in controlling pigeons (we're not just looking at you, councillors)then you would be wise to check out this site. This site is a massive resource and education tool on methods and materials to control pigeon populations successfully without culling them.
Save the Trafalgar Square Pigeons (STTSP) was born in 2000 when the Mayor of London announced that sale of pigeon food in the square would stop. This meant that thousands of pigeons, who had been fed every day for generations by tourists and the public, would face death by starvation. STTSP worked with the council and organisations like PiCAS to reduce the population gradually, without culling and without removing all of the food. They were very successful and after just 5-6 years the population was reduced by 70%, without killing a single one. STTSP have been a great support to the WACC in our campaign and ongoing efforts.
PeTA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) work globally to campaign for the rights of all animals. Their reputation for fighting against animal cruelty is world renowned. PeTA was extremely supportive and played a pivotal role in our campaign to stop the Wellington City Council from culling the city pigeons.
